A big secret about the Nuwara Eliya Presidential Palace is revealed

The granddaughter of the first Governor of Nuwara Eliya, Sir William Henry Gregory, and her husband were on a tour of the Nuwara Eliya area. Belenda Hunt spoke to the media at the Nuwara Eliya Alpine Hotel about her visit.

Sir William Henry Gregory served as the Governor of Nuwara Eliya for four years from 1871 to 1875. Belenda Hunt said that the Nuwara Eliya Presidential Palace was a building owned by Sir William Henry Gregory and that the building was sold to the Sri Lankan government for 1500 British pounds without the permission of the British government.

She said that she, who was accompanying her husband on her first visit to Sri Lanka, had wanted to visit the current Presidential Palace in Nuwara Eliya, the building where her grandfather lived, and she expressed her gratitude to the relevant officials for immediately granting her permission to visit it after requesting permission from the officials of the Presidential Secretariat.

She said that she and her husband were warmly welcomed by the officials there when they visited the Presidential Palace and were given a tea party. She said that the Presidential Palace is a building that reflects the grandeur of the country and is located on a land of 125 acres, and that the Sri Lankan government is maintaining it well.

She also requested the relevant authorities to maintain the building, which is of great value today, as a museum within the limits and allow the public to learn about its history.

Mrs. Belenda Hunt has joined us to visit the Gregory Lake built by her grandfather, and she said that Gregory Lake is also a place that adds color to the beauty of Nuwara Eliya.
