A recent survey has revealed that more than 5,000 girls under the age of 16 have been sexually assaulted in the last 4 years.
Kandy National Hospital lawyer Dr. Palitha Bandara Subasinghe said that from 2018 to 2021, 6307 complaints have been received regarding the rape of girls under the age of 16 across the island, of which 5055 were raped with their will.
132 girls under the age of 16 have been raped in the last three years in 17 police jurisdictions of the Kandy police domain. But Dr. Subasinghe mentioned that majority of them have been subjected to rape willingly. He also mentioned that only 15 girls were raped during the four years of the survey.
