30 million worth of cigarettes seized in Katunayake

Customs officers at the Bandaranaike International Airport have seized a consignment of foreign-made cigarettes worth about 30 million rupees, airport sources say.

The consignment of cigarettes, which was brought to the country from Dubai, was found among the ownerless luggage at the airport this afternoon (27) March.

Airport officials were able to find 1,000 cigarette boxes containing about 200,000 cigarettes of the “Platinum” and “Manchester” brands in the luggage. All the cigarettes were seized by the customs officers, and arrangements have been made to transfer the consignment to the main customs warehouse complex in Colombo for further investigation. Investigations have been initiated to find out who owns the luggage.
