National People’s Power MP Lakshman Nipunaarachchi has filed a petition before the Supreme Court in support of the government’s proposed 22nd Amendment to the Constitution.
The petition argues that the provisions of the proposed bill do not harm the sovereignty of the people or the independence of the judiciary.
Therefore, MP Nipunaarachchi requests the Supreme Court to rule that the approval of the people through a referendum is not required for the adoption of the proposed amendment, and that it can be enacted through the parliamentary procedure provided for in the Constitution.
More than 20 petitions have been filed so far questioning the constitutionality of the proposed amendment.
The government has stated that it is ready to move forward with the proposed constitutional amendment process and will comply with any order issued by the Supreme Court on whether a referendum is required.
