Sumedha Somaratne, President of the Railway Station Masters’ Union, stated that several railway trade unions will definitely proceed with a planned strike this coming Thursday if the government fails to take immediate action to appoint a new General Manager of Railways to resolve existing administrative issues within the department.
He further noted that, for the first time in history, railway passenger associations have also pledged their support for this strike.
R.A. Ranatunga, President of the Heendeniya-Pattigoda United Railway Passengers’ Association, confirmed that his association is also supporting this trade union action due to the continued lack of proper solutions to passenger grievances, including train delays.
It is reported that a meeting is scheduled for tomorrow (14) between railway trade unions and the Deputy Minister of Transport to discuss the issues currently facing the Railway Department. Railway trade unions emphasize that they will proceed with the planned strike if the expected solutions are not reached during the discussion.
