The current government, which came to power promising to change the country’s political system and protect basic human rights, is going to turn democracy upside down by bringing the 22nd Amendment, said Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa.
He further said that while the separation of powers between the executive, legislature and judiciary, which strengthens democracy, is being preserved and strengthened, through the 22nd Amendment, the process of disseminating justice is being destroyed, the judiciary is being insulted, the judges are being insulted, and the rule of law is being violated.
The Opposition Leader said this while addressing a diploma conferment ceremony held at the Hon. D. S. Senanayake Faculty of Political Science.
Even the previous government said that the country was stable by shrinking both democracy and people’s lives, but what happened was that the Provident Fund was pressured without touching the super millionaires in the restructuring of domestic debt, and even the current government is trampling on the agricultural farmers who voted for it, causing a loss of Rs. 17 on every kilo of paddy, he said.
The opposition leader said that a government that came to power claiming to be a walking library and building the country for justice and liberation by defeating family rule has achieved the most unsuccessful results in democratic history, and that this government is destroying people’s lives more than the previous government, that this government is even strengthening lumpen capitalism, and that the government is surrounded by super rich people.
