Betel nut banned.

As oral cancer is the leading cause of cancer in Sri Lanka, the Public Health Inspectors Association of Sri Lanka says it will strictly implement the necessary legal measures to ban the use, sale and distribution of betel nut mixed with tobacco in the country.

Commenting on this, the Treasurer of the Public Health Inspectors Association of Sri Lanka, M.A.C. Prasad, stated that the main reason why people in this country suffer from oral cancer is the consumption of betel nut mixed with tobacco and various chewing tobacco products.

He emphasized that according to the existing law in Sri Lanka, a betel nut cannot contain tobacco and the sale, distribution, possession, offering for sale and storage of betel nut containing tobacco is a punishable offense.
