Senior Attorney-at-Law Lal Wijenayake, an Executive Committee member of the National People’s Power (NPP), passed away last night. He was 85 years old at the time of his death.
Having served for a long period as a member of the Politburo of the Lanka Sama Samaja Party (LSSP), he was, at the time of his passing, a member of both the Steering Committee and the Executive Council of the National People’s Power.
He later left the LSSP and contributed to the formation of the United Left Front. As the first Leader of the Opposition in the Central Provincial Council, he despite being part of the governing side openly expressed his opposition to the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution, as well as to the Bill aimed at protecting the state from terrorism.
