The Department of Fisheries has issued an urgent warning to refrain from fishing.
The Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources informs all fishermen to refrain from fishing as the sea areas around the island may be rough or very rough during the next 24 hours.
The special weather advisory issued today (02) at 10.30 a.m. states that the wind speed in the sea areas from Mullaitivu to Kankesanthurai, Mannar, Puttalam, Colombo, Galle and Hambantota to Pottuvil may increase to between 50 and 60 kilometers per hour at times.
As a result, the relevant sea areas are in a very dangerous condition for fishing, and if there are fishing vessels already engaged in fishing at sea, they should immediately return to land safely.
The Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources further informs the fishing community that it is mandatory to wear life jackets during any fishing activity and to follow the instructions of the authorities in the face of the prevailing adverse weather conditions and take steps to protect their lives and property.
