A Gazette Notification has been issued declaring a number of services as essential services.

An Extraordinary Gazette Notification has been issued declaring a number of services such as all services related to the supply of electricity, fuel, petroleum products, gas supply or distribution, hospitals, dispensaries, passenger or goods transport, etc. as essential services.

This Extraordinary Gazette Notification has been issued in accordance with the powers vested in the President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka under Section 2 of the Essential Public Services Act, No. 61 of 1979.

Considering the disaster situation caused by Cyclone Ditva, the services mentioned in the Schedule below have been declared as essential services in the said Gazette Notification. The said services are as follows.

All services related to the supply of electricity

Supply or distribution of fuel including petroleum products, gas

All services, works or labour of any description necessary or to be done in connection with the maintenance and reception, care, feeding and treatment of patients in hospitals, nursing homes, dispensaries and other similar institutions

Public transport services for the transport of passengers or goods

Provision and maintenance of roads, bridges, culverts, airports, ports and railways, including roads, railways or air passenger transport services, tourist services

All services related to the supply of water and drainage

All services related to the supply, protection and distribution of food and essential commodities

All District Secretariats, Divisional Secretariats, Grama Niladharis, Samurdhi Development Officers, Agricultural Research Assistants, Community Empowerment Officers, Clean Sri Lanka Central Team Officers All services, work or labour of any nature whatsoever which are to be performed or required to be performed by field level officers of the District and Divisional Secretariats.
Ambulance services

All State banking and insurance services including the Central Bank of Sri Lanka.
Any function carried out by a local government body for the provision of water, electricity, drainage and sewage, fire fighting and ambulance services, waste treatment and disposal (including the collection and disposal of excreta) and all services performed by local government bodies

All services relating to irrigation

All services relating to telephone, telecommunications and media

All services relating to reclamation and development of low-lying land

All services relating to agriculture and agricultural insurance services
