Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama today ordered that the further examination of evidence in the case filed against Wimal Weerawansa and 6 others on charges of causing public distress by blocking roads and protesting in front of the United Nations Office in Colombo in 2016 be postponed until July 13.
The court has also ordered that further examination of evidence in the case be called on July 13 as the witnesses in the case did not appear in court at that time.
On February 6, 2016, when the then United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Prince Zeid Al Hussein, visited Sri Lanka, the Cinnamon Gardens Police have filed a case against these defendants, alleging that they caused public distress by blocking roads and protesting in front of the United Nations Office in Colombo’s Three Corners.
The case has been filed against former Minister Wimal Weerawansa, Jayantha Samaraweera, Weerakumara Dissanayake, Piyasiri Wijenayake, Roger Seneviratne and Mohamed Muzammil, alleging that they committed an offence punishable under the Manmawath Act and the Police Ordinance.
