Private sector allowed to sell urea

The government has decided to allow private institutions to distribute urea fertilizer, said Agriculture Director General Thushara Wickramarachchi. He said this while addressing a media briefing held today (11).

Although there was a stock of nearly one hundred and fifty thousand metric tons of urea fertilizer as of March, the government decided to provide urea fertilizer to farmers only through Agricultural Service Centers in order to distribute fertilizer to farmers in a systematic manner.

However, industry sources are confident that the fertilizer shortage in the country will be resolved with the private sector being allowed to sell urea.
