Former South African player and coach Gary Kirsten has been appointed as the head coach of the Sri Lankan cricket team, sources close to the new Sri Lanka Cricket Board say.

Gary Kirsten has been appointed as the head coach of the Sri Lankan cricket team for a period of two years and his tenure will be effective from the 15th of next month.

Gary Kirsten was the head coach of the Indian team between 2008 and 2011, and his guidance to winning the ODI World Cup in 2011 was outstanding.

Gary Kirsten represented the South African national team from 1993 to 2004, scoring 14,087 runs in ODIs and Tests.

Former Sri Lankan cricket coach Sanath Jayasuriya will take over as the new coach of the Bangladesh team, unconfirmed sources say.
