University students oppose UGC rule

The circular issued by the University Grants Commission, stating that teachers should intervene to monitor all activities of university students, is facing strong opposition from both students and teachers.

The Federation of University Teachers’ Associations points out that although the aim of the circular is to prevent vandalism, this will not achieve that aim at all.

The University Grants Commission issued Circular 2026/02 on February 6, stating that all activities, including extracurricular activities, organized by university students should be supervised by teachers and officials.

This is with the aim of preventing vandalism.

In parallel, students at the University of Kelaniya protested last Tuesday against a decision by the administration to end student activities at 10 pm.

Meanwhile, the Peradeniya University General Students’ Union says that the government is bringing in such ordinances to suppress the student movement.
