All six police officers who assaulted the priest have been arrested.

The six police officers of the Gampaha Divisional Crime Investigation Unit who were arrested in an incident involving the assault of a Catholic priest have been remanded until tomorrow (26).

This was after the group of suspected officers were arrested by the Gampaha Police and produced before the Gampaha Magistrate’s Court this afternoon (25).

A Catholic priest named Milan Priyadarshana, a resident of Kotadeniyawa, had been admitted to the Negombo District General Hospital yesterday (24) alleging that he had been assaulted by a group of police officers.

Accordingly, the National Catholic Mass Communication Director Rev. Father Jude Crisantha Fernando and a group including Samagi Jana Balawegaya MP Kavinda Jayawardena arrived at the Negombo Hospital today to inquire about the well-being of the priest who is receiving treatment as a resident in Ward 7 of the Negombo Hospital.

Six officers of the Gampaha Divisional Crime Investigation Unit were arrested by the Gampaha Police today on suspicion of involvement in this incident.

They are three police sergeants and three police constables from the Combat Motorcycle Team of the said investigation unit.
