It is reported that Deputy Minister of Public Security, Attorney-at-Law Sunil Watagala, has filed a case at the Kaduwela District Court against Mahinda Pathirana, an activist of the People’s Front.
The Deputy Minister has requested that he be paid 10 billion rupees in compensation for the insult he suffered.
The complaint states that he has been severely insulted by a false statement made targeting Deputy Minister Sunil Watagala the other day.
Sunil Watagala has told the court that Mahinda Pathirana has deliberately spread false information with the aim of not only discrediting himself but also his political movement.
In September 2025, Mahinda Pathirana had claimed on his Facebook account that the Deputy Minister owned a luxury house in the Cinnamon Life housing complex in Colombo. He had alleged that it was a suspicious house obtained through a bribe.
However, Sunil Watagala says that the statement is completely false and malicious.
Mahinda Pathirana has rejected the previous letter sent to him asking him to correct this false statement or pay compensation.
