It is reported that 1421 hectares of vegetable crops have been damaged in the Nuwara Eliya district due to adverse weather conditions. This was reported at a meeting held in Nuwara Eliya yesterday under the patronage of President Anura Dissanayake.
Agriculture officials who briefed the President on the damage caused to the agricultural sector in the district due to Cyclone Ditva and the urgent measures to be taken in this regard made this information clear.
They said that the reduction in vegetable harvest in the Nuwara Eliya district due to the damage to crops does not exceed 25%, and that the daily supply of vegetables in Nuwara Eliya before the disaster can still be met, but a decrease in the daily demand for vegetables is observed.
Agriculture officials say that this situation has arisen due to the decrease in the number of buyers due to false news that there is a shortage of vegetables in the Nuwara Eliya district and that prices have increased.
President Anura Kumara Dissanayake instructed the relevant officials to take necessary steps to promptly compensate farmers for crop damage.
