The Supreme Court has granted permission to hear a fundamental rights petition filed by the Bar Association of Sri Lanka regarding the death of a second-year student of the Sabaragamuwa University who committed suicide while facing freshman torture.

The Bar Association of Sri Lanka had filed a fundamental rights petition seeking a verdict that the suicide of Charith Dilshan Dayananda, a second-year student of the Faculty of Technology of the Sabaragamuwa University, was a violation of fundamental human rights and an order to the respondents to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the matter.

The petitions were filed by the President of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka, Advocate Rajeev Amarasuriya, and its Secretary, Chathuraya Galhena.
