Suspended Treasury official dies under suspicious circumstances

The Kuliyapitiya Police said that the death of Ranga Rajapaksa, the Assistant Director of the Department of Foreign Resources of the Treasury, who was suspended in connection with the incident in which 2.5 million US dollars were missing, is suspicious and accordingly, investigations have been initiated to determine whether his death was a murder or a suicide.

Kuliyapitiya Police stated that a knife had fallen near the body of Ranga Rajapaksa, who was lying near a banana tree in the garden with three cuts on his leg and hand, and that there was a large blood stain not far from where he had grown up. The Kuliyapitiya Magistrate visited the scene this afternoon and conducted a magisterial investigation, while the police are conducting further investigations.

It has now been confirmed that the initial step of crediting the money to the bank account provided by the hackers through a fake email message was due to the negligence of this officer. He had been summoned to the Criminal Investigation Department on several occasions in connection with the investigations into the missing US$2.5 million incident. The Criminal Investigation Department had also taken his computer into its custody and the investigating officers stated that he had been cooperating well with the investigations.
