The Legal Officers’ Association of the Attorney General’s Department has expressed its opposition to the proposed move to establish an office of a Director of Public Prosecutions.
The association states that such a move will undermine the independence, efficiency and professional standards of the department.
At a special general meeting held on 15th March, the association, which expressed its full support for measures aimed at enhancing independence, transparency and efficiency within the department, unanimously resolved to strongly oppose the creation of a separate Office of the Prosecutor.
The Association has observed that steps are being taken to consider the establishment of a Director of Public Prosecutions, with the aim of enhancing the independence and transparency of the Attorney General’s Department and expediting the criminal justice process, as proposed.
However, the Association members stated that no practical or scientific evidence has been presented to prove that those objectives can be achieved by separating the prosecutorial function from the department.
