Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala said in Parliament today (23) that successful information has been received about the suspects in the murder of Weligama Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Lasantha Wickramasekera.
Accordingly, they are scheduled to be arrested in the next two to three days, he added.
“4 police teams have been deployed. Information has been received so far. All those involved in this will be arrested within 2 to 3 days. An order has been given for that. Information is being received about it. We regret that he was murdered. I said yesterday that this is the underworld, it is not relevant to us whether it is someone who does illegal activities or someone else. We are committed to protecting every life.” The Minister said.
Yesterday (22) morning, Weligama Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Lasantha Wickramasekera was shot by an unknown gunman in his official office. The chairman, who was seriously injured, died after being admitted to the Matara District General Hospital.
The police suspect that the murder was carried out by the gang of Midigama Ruwan, who is being held in the Boossa Prison.
It is said that Lasanna Wickramasekera had also sent a letter to the IGP on August 29th, requesting him to take appropriate steps regarding his life security regarding the threats being made against him.
