Political sources say that the government has presented two views on the proposed provincial council elections. Accordingly, it is understood that the JVP faction affiliated with the government is proposing to postpone or not hold the provincial council elections.
However, the faction representing the National Scholars Alliance within the government is proposing that the provincial council elections should be held at the earliest possible time, and MP Nihal Abeysinghe, who represents that faction, has pointed this out on several occasions.
This situation has caused great anger among the JVP faction and political commentators say that the party cadre is trying to please the party by declaring that the elections will not be held this year since the money allocated for the provincial council elections was allocated for subsidies during a recent visit to the North.
Commenting on this, Cabinet Spokesperson Minister Nalinda Jayatissa said that although funds have been allocated to hold the election, the obstacle is a legal issue that has arisen regarding the manner in which the election will be held. Meanwhile, opposition groups say that the Provincial Council elections can be held under the existing system until the existing legal obstacles are resolved and that they will support the relevant amendments.
