Upuldeniya remanded until 25th

Colombo Chief Magistrate Thanuja Lakmali today ordered that Prison Commissioner Thushara Upuldeniya be remanded in custody until June 25th.

The magistrate made this order when the suspended Prison Commissioner was produced before the court this afternoon (11).

President’s Counsel Navin Indra Tissa, appearing for the suspect, requested the court to release the suspect under any bail conditions. The court judge, after considering the submissions made by Additional Solicitor General Dilipa Peiris, who led the prosecution on behalf of the Attorney General, ordered the suspect to be remanded in custody.

Dilipa Peiris stated before the court that it has been reported that the prisoner named Athula Nilakaratne, who was allegedly illegally released, has fled the country by now.

The Additional Solicitor General also pointed out that the investigations into this incident have not been completed yet and that a fraud that has been going on for years cannot be completed in a few days. He also pointed out that since the criminals in Sri Lanka are very sophisticated, it will take at least two weeks to complete these investigations.

Additional Solicitor General President’s Counsel Dileepa Peiris further stated that he will take steps to present facts about these investigations in a way that will amaze even the court in the next hearing.

On June 9th, the Criminal Investigations Department arrested suspect Upul Ldeniya and produced him before Colombo Additional Magistrate Manjula Ratnayake yesterday (10).

The suspect was ordered to be remanded until today and was also ordered to be produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate.
