A Sri Lankan student who had an abortion and her Sri Lankan boyfriend were arrested in Japan

The local media reports that two Sri Lankans in Japan have recently been arrested for carrying out an illegal abortion.

The Ibaraki Prefectural Police has announced on May 23 that Udeshika, a student living in Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan, arrested her boyfriend, Dilshan, a student living in Utsunomiya.

The police said that this pregnant student aborted the child by using drugs on April 29 at De Soyza’s house. Both suspects are in their 30s and have admitted the charges.

According to investigations linked to the incident, the student went to an obstetrician in Tochigi Prefecture in late March and requested an abortion, but the doctor refused because the fetus exceeded the period allowed for abortion under Japan’s Maternal Health Act.

It is reported that this student is studying in Japan. The local media reports that these two are likely to be deported to Sri Lanka.

Recently, several cases of foreign students getting pregnant while studying have been reported in Japan. It is also reported that some female students resume their education after giving birth. An expert has pointed out that the unstable residential situation of international students could be the cause of this incident.
