State Minister of Water Supply Sanath Nishantha said that even though drinking water charges have been increased by 50%, the water supply board still has to bear a loss of two cents per liter of water.
Before the tariff increase, it cost 7 cents to produce a liter of clean water, but it was given to consumers for 2 cents. He says that the board’s loss was 5 cents per litre.
The Minister of State pointed out that after increasing the rates, the board will incur a loss of 2 cents even though the opportunity to provide a liter of water to the people for 5 cents.
