Yaka Bridge bids farewell. A double railway bridge over the Mahaweli River.

The Railway Department says that attention has been focused on developing the railway bridge built over the Mahaweli River between the Peradeniya and Sarasavi Uyana railway stations as a double track.

This bridge, known as the Black Bridge, has been severely damaged by the disaster caused by bad weather.

General Manager of the Railway Department Ravindra Padmapriya said that it is observed that the bridge has become unrecoverable, but that a correct decision can be taken in this regard tomorrow.

“We hope to decide from Monday how the tilted part of the bridge can be reconstructed. That is how the plans are going forward. Most likely, we are planning to go forward as a new bridge. We are planning to build it as a double track. Because this bridge is in a condition that is not suitable for temporary maintenance.”
