Wildlife assistance for polling stations in Kandy district where wild elephants are a threat

Kandy District Returning Officer Indika Udawatte says that a special security program is in place for polling stations located in areas in Kandy district where wild elephants are a threat, including Galamuduna and Udagaldebokka.

He stated that the program has been launched jointly by the Wildlife Department and the Disaster Management Center. Returning Officer and District Secretary Indika Udawatte expressed these views while participating in a media briefing held at the Kandy District Secretariat today (05) regarding the transportation of ballot boxes.

Speaking at the event, he stated that necessary arrangements have been made to conduct the election without any hindrance under natural disaster conditions caused by landslides, heavy rains and flash floods. He said that the Road Development Authority, the Army and the Navy, and other security forces have been informed in this regard.

He said that the issuance of ballot boxes is currently being completed and that all necessary arrangements have been made to ensure the success of the voting and counting of votes tomorrow.

District Secretary Indika Udawatte further stated that 4,500 police officers have been deployed for security purposes and 5,000 officers for election duties.
