Minister Vijitha Herath responded to the question of whether the government accepts the critical report issued by the President of the Commonwealth Bar Association, Stephen Thiru, on the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution.
In response, he said that his government will only accept the decision of the Supreme Court and expects the Supreme Court’s decision on the 22nd Amendment to be presented to Parliament promptly.
Minister Vijitha Herath also expressed his views on whether a referendum is required on the relevant amendment, or whether it can be passed only with a two-thirds majority in Parliament.
He stated that anyone with an understanding of constitutional law can gain a clear understanding of the articles that should and should not be subject to a referendum, and that the final decision on whether or not to hold a referendum on the 22nd Amendment can be taken after receiving the Supreme Court’s verdict.
He said this while responding to questions raised by journalists at the Cabinet press conference held yesterday.
