UN envoy meets Minister Vijitha with over $4 million in aid

The United Nations has pledged its full support for the reconstruction efforts in Sri Lanka, which has been devastated by recent severe weather conditions.

The UN Resident Coordinator, Marc-André, made the announcement during a meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Overseas Employment and Tourism, Vijith Herath, at the Ministry.

The UN Resident Coordinator announced that US$4.5 million will be immediately allocated under its Rapid Response Fund to assist affected communities, and a symbolic handover of aid was also made.

A five-member team from the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has already arrived in Sri Lanka to conduct a detailed assessment of the damage caused by the severe weather and coordinate with the Disaster Management Centre (DMC).
