The United Nations has pledged its full support for the reconstruction efforts in Sri Lanka, which has been devastated by recent severe weather conditions.
The UN Resident Coordinator, Marc-André, made the announcement during a meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Overseas Employment and Tourism, Vijith Herath, at the Ministry.
The UN Resident Coordinator announced that US$4.5 million will be immediately allocated under its Rapid Response Fund to assist affected communities, and a symbolic handover of aid was also made.
A five-member team from the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has already arrived in Sri Lanka to conduct a detailed assessment of the damage caused by the severe weather and coordinate with the Disaster Management Centre (DMC).
