The American ambassador to Sri Lanka, Julie Chang, says that no change has been made in the tourism advisory that was introduced to Sri Lanka some time ago.
Speaking after an event held at the American Center in Colombo, she said that it was “fake news” to say that a travel ban had been imposed on Sri Lanka.
“If the US embassy becomes aware of a security threat, we must inform our staff, US citizens and the relevant government about the information. A double policy is not followed in that regard. It is the accepted method we use all over the world.
After we learned about the threat to Arugambe area, we informed the Sri Lankan authorities. They responded quickly. We are working with them efficiently. Communicate with them daily.
I would like to talk about fake news. No travel ban has been imposed on Sri Lanka. Last week, our security alert was issued to US citizens not to travel to Arugambay until further notice. But there is no change in the travel advisory issued for Sri Lanka. It’s the same. It is the second level (Level 2). It went on like that for many years. It is similar to travel advisories issued for the Maldives, Italy and France. ” she said.
