It is reported that a re-investigation is to be conducted into the allegation levelled against Dr. Shihabdeen Mohamed Shafi that he had sterilized women by damaging their fallopian tubes during caesarean sections. Accordingly, two DIGs are to be questioned in this regard, police sources say.
Dr. Shihabdeen Mohamed Shafi, who was then a S.H.O at the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital, was arrested and remanded in custody on May 25, 2019, on charges of sterilising women and earning illicit money.
While investigations are being conducted into the matter, a significant number of women who complained that he had sterilized them have become pregnant and given birth to children.
He was acquitted of the charges after about five years. Dr. Shihabdeen Mohamed Shafi recently approached the Ministry of Public Security to seek justice for the injustice he suffered.
It is stated that investigations have been initiated on the orders of the Inspector General of Police on the basis of that complaint.
