This government does not have the capacity to suppress the media.

Dr. Nirmal Ranjith Dewasiri says that even if the current National People’s Power government wants to maintain a repressive mechanism, it does not have the “capacity” to do so.

Making a special statement on his internet channel, he says that even if the government has a need for such suppression, they do not have the right to implement it.

He says that there has been great unrest in the government regarding the operations of the ‘Hiru’ media network in recent times and therefore there has been a strong desire to take action against it.

He emphasizes that the current talk about media suppression has been created against that background,
and that the overall strength of the government is at a very minimal level.

“Even if the government wants to maintain a repressive mechanism, they do not have the necessary strength to do so. In general, the capacity of this government is not great. It is absolutely impossible for a government with such low capacity to maintain a complex process like a repressive mechanism,” said Dr Dewasiri.
