The Tipper driver remanded for breaking a tusk of tusker

The driver of the tipper has been remanded until the 21st in connection with the incident in which an elephant collided with a lorry at the 09th post in Galapitagala on the Hambarana-Maradankadawala road.

This was after he was produced before the Kekirawa Magistrate’s Court today (07).

The Magistrate also ordered the officers of the Ganewalpola Wildlife Office to submit a report to the court regarding the accident.

Presenting the suspected tipper driver to the court, the wildlife officers of the Ganewalpola Wildlife Office stated that one of the elephant’s tusk had broken off from its body and fallen on the road.

They stated before the court that the driver of the suspected tipper that caused the accident drove his vehicle continuously and fled before being arrested while hiding.

Wildlife officials also said that this elephant is suspected to be the elephant known as ‘Sumedha’, but this has not yet been confirmed, and that operations are underway to find the elephant.

A lawyer had also appeared on behalf of the Sri Lankan representatives of the World Elephant Conservation Organization in this case.
