The talk of dissolving parliament before the presidential election is just a dream

Cabinet Spokesman Minister Bandula Gunawardena said yesterday that President Ranil Wickremesinghe does not intend to extend his term of office or to amend the Constitution to hold an emergency general election. He mentioned this while addressing the weekly press conference to announce cabinet decisions.

The minister said there that there has been a disturbance in the stock market due to the statements made by various parties last week that an emergency general election will be held before the presidential election.

Minister Bandhula Gunawardena stated that the President clearly stated that the presidential election will be held this year according to the constitution and the budget has been allocated for that purpose.

“Different parties announced that the parliament will be dissolved on June 15 and that a general election will be held before the presidential election, and those announcements created a great controversy in the country. These statements managed to create a disturbance in the stock market. It is only a dream of some people. The cabinet drew attention to this.” He further said.
