The Speaker has lied to Parliament about the no-confidence motion.

Speaker Jagath Wickramanayake’s statement that he decided not to debate the no-confidence motion filed by the opposition against Deputy Minister of Defence Aruna Jayasekara after studying the report of the Attorney General and the Parliamentary Secretariat is false, it has been reported.

This situation has arisen because neither the Attorney General’s opinion nor the Secretariat’s report states that a no-confidence motion cannot be brought against a Deputy Minister. The report states that the matters related to the said no-confidence motion are not directly relevant to the Easter attacks and the legal proceedings currently pending before the courts in relation to it.

The Opposition Leader and other opposition representatives requested that the report be presented to Parliament.
