The sea around the island is rough. Fishermen are warned not to go to sea.

An emergency notice has been issued by the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources targeting the fishing and naval community.

According to the statement, the wind speed in the sea areas from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota may increase to 70 kilometers per hour at times, so there is a high possibility of rough or very rough seas in those areas.

According to the hazardous weather statement issued by the Department of Meteorology today (09), the prevailing weather conditions in the sea areas around the island may become rough. As such, it is extremely risky for coastal fishing activities, so small vessels engaged in one-day and coastal work are warned not to set out for fishing activities.

Similarly, fishing vessels departing for fishing activities from other areas where a dangerous situation has not been reported are also warned to refrain from entering this dangerous sea area designated from Matara to Pottuvil.

The Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources urges all fishermen to remain vigilant regarding the current weather conditions and future weather advisories, and to strictly adhere to safety instructions and act responsibly.
