The Peradeniya dean will go to court against the striking non-academic workers

The Faculty of Arts Dean Dr. Prabhat Ekanayake has filed a case before the Kandy District Court against the ongoing strike of the University of Peradeniya in conjunction with the ongoing non-academic staff strike.

Due to this strike, he claims before the court that the Acting Chief Security Officer illegally kept 21 keys of nineteen academic departments of the Faculty of Arts, the Dean’s Office and the Art Gallery in his custody.

Therefore, the dean requests the court to issue a mandatory interim order against the respondents who obstructed the academic staff in performing their duties in the said departments

The complainant further stated that an international conference and three projects organized by the Faculty of Arts are scheduled to be held on the 31st of May and the 4th of June, and the finance manager of the Peradeniya University and his staff, who are participating in the strike, have prevented the necessary financial allocations for those conferences and projects.

Therefore, the Dean has also requested a command order ordering the release of those funds for these projects.

After considering the facts presented, the District Judge was informed that the order regarding whether to issue an interim order or not will be announced on the 28th of this month.
