The health sector is on the verge of collapse. Doctors are preparing for a continuous strike.

The President or the Minister in charge of the subject should immediately intervene to protect the free health system and resolve the problems faced by doctors, says the Government Medical Officers Association’s media spokesperson Dr. Chamil Wijesinghe.

He said this while briefing the media about the ongoing medical strike.

He said that if the government fails to provide reasonable solutions to the problems faced by doctors, the current series of protests will be intensified into a continuous trade union struggle.

He stated that a symbolic strike was launched across the island in the last two days with the aim of pressuring the government due to the previous breach of promises made by the Minister of Health, and that the Health Minister’s arbitrary and irresponsible disregard for the demands of the doctors has been the root cause of this crisis.

Dr. Chamil Wijesinghe also said that the government and the relevant minister should accept full responsibility for the suffering suffered by the public due to the collapse of hospital services in the past two days.
