The 22nd Amendment to the Constitution will undermine the independence of the judiciary and undermine the rule of law, and the 22nd Amendment will completely eliminate it in a country where the rule of law is already at a low ebb due to shootings every day, said Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa.
He pointed out that when the current President was an opposition member, when the government brought the 20th Amendment, it said that a referendum was needed in addition to the 2/3 majority of Parliament, but today government representatives are saying that a referendum is not needed.
Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa stated that he will question the President whether a referendum is needed for the 22nd Amendment, just as a referendum was requested when the 20th Amendment was brought.
Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa said this while addressing the Samagi Vanitha Balawegaya’s Rattota Electoral Council formation meeting.
The Opposition Leader, who commented on the President’s Beruwala meeting, said that the fishermen have been orphaned due to that meeting.
”The President has started going on random trips these days. There is such a meeting in Beruwala today. Therefore, it is reported that the police have issued a statement prohibiting fishermen who have gone to sea from coming to the Beruwala port. At least the President has not been able to hold meetings without harming the fishermen.
This government has become a government that is devoid of humanity, violates human rights, has no place for people’s sovereignty, and does not respect the independence of the judiciary. This dictatorship started with the Youth Society and Civil Defense Committee elections. Members were appointed to those institutions on the Pelawatte list. Through this, this government destroyed democracy. It is taking away the rights of the people and creating a dictatorial single-party rule. ” The opposition leader said.
