The Presidential Media Division (PMD) said that the German Sri Lanka Friendship Women’s Hospital in Galle Karapitiya, which is the largest maternity hospital in South Asia, was opened this morning under the participation of President Ranil Wickremesinghe.
The hospital has 640 beds, six operating theatres, emergency units, intensive care, pediatric units and modern facilities.
Former German Chancellor Helmut Kohl, who was visiting Sri Lanka during the Tsunami disaster in 2004, offered to build a new hospital in Sri Lanka to replace the damaged Mahmodara Hospital. The construction of this hospital started in 2005 with financial support from the Helmut Kohl Foundation.
The construction, which was hampered on several occasions due to various problems, was completed recently, and this hospital, which opened today, is considered to be the most fully equipped women’s hospital in Sri Lanka.
