The Easter attacks were covered up for five and a half years.

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake said that the investigations into the Easter attacks that hit the country in 2019 are now yielding successful results.

The President stated this while addressing an election rally of the National People’s Power held in Kurunegala.

‘It has been six years since the Easter attacks. Of these six years, five and a half years were spent not investigating the Easter attacks but suppressing them. In fact, a Presidential Commission of Inquiry was established. A report came out of it. The Cabinet had taken a decision. That report would not be implemented.

What does that mean? It was not governments that launched investigations into the Easter attacks, but governments that had been there for five and a half years to cover up the Easter attacks. In five and a half years, a lot can be covered up, a lot can be hidden.

Now, the government that is investigating has been in place for six months. We are investigating and some successful results are being reported. We have opened the door for a very independent investigation without interfering. Therefore, the government that intervenes to provide justice to the victims is our government,’ the President said there.
