Deputy Minister of Industry and Entrepreneurship Development Chaturanga Abeysinghe said that if it can be legally proven that extending the retirement age of judges will have an impact on the independence of the judiciary, the government still has time to consider it.
Stating that Parliament has the full power and right to make decisions on the composition and amendments of the judiciary according to the Constitution, he said that the opposition is afraid of the proposed amendments because their members are in prison.
He noted that the independence of the judiciary means that the law is implemented swiftly, fairly and without influence, and that the independence of the judiciary has not been harmed in the current process.
