Following strong protests by Tamil student organizations and activists in the United Kingdom, Member of Parliament Namal Rajapaksa commented on the cancellation of a lecture he was scheduled to attend at University of Cambridge through a post on his X social media account.
In his statement, he said that he had accepted the invitation unconditionally, but due to pressure created by organized groups, the organizers were compelled to cancel the lecture and discussion.
He further noted that instead of disruptions, engagement through dialogue is more valuable, and that society should promote the exchange of ideas through reasoned debate rather than attempting to silence discussion through intimidation.
However, the MP also expressed his gratitude to the two organizations that invited him. In his statement, he added that he hopes there will be an opportunity in the future to meet at a forum that encourages open and constructive dialogue.
