The landslide that occurred in the lower Kadugannawa area yesterday (22) is an unusually dangerous situation for the area, says Dr. Gamini Jayatissa, Director of the Landslide Research Division of the National Building Research Institute. Accordingly, he further states that there is no dangerous situation affecting the entire area.
He said this in response to the news circulating on social media that the Kadugannawa area has become a dangerous situation for landslides.
The area where the railway line is located is located entirely on the bedrock, and the rock that has come loose at the site of the landslide is only a eroded portion of the bedrock above the Colombo-Kandy main road, and therefore there is no need to have undue fear about this, he further states.
He also said that there is no large-scale impact on the railway or the main road due to this and that the impact is only applicable to those places.
The director stated that the road has been closed for the time being to remove the collapsed rock fragments and ensure the safety of the road.
