Statement from the Central Bank Governor on Restricting Vehicle Imports

The Central Bank of Sri Lanka Governor Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe stated yesterday (23) that the government or the Central Bank has not taken any decision to restrict the import of vehicles into the country. The announcement was made at the media briefing held at the Central Bank premises to announce the Monetary Policy Statement.

“The Central Bank has not paid any attention to restricting them. The market that has been opened will continue to be open. The government also has no such intention. As far as I know, I do not think so. I do not think the Minister will make such a change in a statement.”

However, he said the following about the new guidelines issued by the Central Bank updating the procedures to be followed by banks and finance companies in providing financial facilities for motor vehicles.

“We cannot expect this to be restricted. But this comes with the risk that the central bank, from a macroprudential perspective, will have to take into account the stability of the financial system and the borrower’s ability to repay the loan. Some kind of adjustment has been made at this time.”
