Sri Lanka is exploring ways to obtain more competitive prices for key imports such as fuel and advanced machinery through ongoing trade negotiations with the United States, Treasury Secretary Dr. Harshana Suriyapperuma confirmed yesterday.
He noted that the negotiations aim to reduce both tariff and non-tariff barriers in a non-discriminatory manner.
“As a net importer of energy, industrial raw materials and advanced machinery, Sri Lanka is already exploring these items internationally. Therefore, we are trying to see how we can open our market in a non-restrictive and non-discriminatory manner,” he told reporters yesterday.
He noted that the current discussions are focused on identifying opportunities to reduce costs and improve access for US suppliers.
Confirming that the energy sector is one area that is being considered in detail, the Treasury Secretary emphasized that ongoing discussions with the United States will also assess the potential for Sri Lanka to benefit from regional trade flows.
