SJB engineers go to court against the Electricity Act

Another petition has been submitted to the Supreme Court requesting that certain clauses of the Electricity Bill submitted to the Parliament be ruled unconstitutional.

Engineers Punya Sri Kumara Jayakodi and Mayura Chandana Nethikumara, who are members of the National People’s Power Energy Committee, have submitted the petition.

The Attorney General has also been named as respondents.

The petitioners claim that the proposed bill has conferred unlimited powers on the minister in charge. The petitioners have mentioned that because of this, the minister in charge is given the opportunity to take arbitrary decisions and it is not good for the existence of the electricity board.

They also point out that through the proposed bill, the authority to increase the electricity tariffs in an arbitrary manner is not good for public welfare.

In addition, the petition states that the Ceylon Electricity Board will be divided into several companies under the proposed Act, thereby seriously challenging the occupational safety of the employees.
