Shashindra Rajapaksa arrested.

Former State Minister Shashindra Rajapaksa has been arrested by officers of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption.

Several properties, including a building illegally constructed on land in Kiriibbanwewa, Sevanagala, belonging to the Mahaweli Authority, were damaged during the public protest held on 09.05.2022.

Shashindra Rajapaksa has been accused of using his official power to influence some government officials attached to the compensation office, despite the fact that the property was identified as property owned by the Sri Lanka Mahaweli Authority and the relevant compensation was refused.

He has also been accused of committing the offence of corruption and conspiracy in obtaining the compensation. In addition, he has been charged with an offence punishable under Section 5(1) of the Public Property Act No. 12 of 1982, as amended by Act No. 28 of 1999, by criminal misappropriation of property owned by the Mahaweli Authority, as the said property was located on land owned by the Mahaweli Authority.

The arrested former State Minister Shashindra Rajapaksa is scheduled to be produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court.
