Justice Minister Wijedasa Rajapaksa made a statement in Parliament yesterday, revealing many serious issues about the judicial sector.
He mentioned that the appointment of judges to the Supreme Court has been suspended by a court order, effectively suspending a chapter of the Constitution. He pointed out that due to the ban on the appointment of judges to the Supreme Court, there is a possibility of the judicial system becoming ineffective.
He also said that this situation poses a risk of creating a serious conflict between the judiciary and the legislature.
The minister stated that the electricity supply to the Magistrate’s office was irregularly obtained from the supply provided to the Mt.lavenia Court. When an electrical technician from the ministry went there to address a problem with the electricity supply, he was electrocuted by the unauthorized connection and had to be treated in the intensive care unit.
In addition, he further mentioned that the water supply was also fraudulently connected.
