Sajith’s appeal to the people.

The opposition leader said that he is appealing to the people to refrain from granting unlimited powers to any government. Accordingly, in future, it is sufficient to grant only a reasonable majority to any government, and that this should allow for the creation of justice, fairness and prosperity in the country.

He said that although the Constitution introduced by former President J.R. Jayewardene had some shortcomings, its powers were very helpful in resolving the terrorist crisis that existed in the country at that time.

However, he pointed out that the priority today should be to secure democracy, freedom and the independence of the judiciary.

He also challenged the government to immediately stop postponing the Provincial Council elections by citing various reasons such as selection committees, and to hold the elections immediately, without limiting itself to empty words.
